    The Board of Governors of Exhibition Place today approved the construction of additional seating at the north end of the stadium by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd (MLSEL).

    Toronto City Council voted 36-4, approving the hotel development with HKHotels on the grounds of Exhibition Place. Scheduled to go under construction in 2011 and open in 2013, the approved “Hotel in the Garden” will be located south of Direct Energy Centre and adjacent to the new Allstream Centre at Exhibition Place.

    At its meeting yesterday, The Board of Governors of Exhibition Place unanimously approved an agreement with HK Hotels for a 320 room, 26 storey glass tower hotel located south of Direct Energy Centre and adjacent to the new Allstream Centre.

    Exhibition Place reduced its electricity demand by 1.6 MW for four hours as a participant in the Ontario Power Authority’s (OPA) Demand Response 3 (DR3) program. Working with Direct Energy Business, Exhibition Place stands to earn in excess of $150,000 for annual participation in the program and an additional $1,000 for each event called during 2009.

    Convention centers and destinations are going green at a far faster rate than the events they host. Often, this is due to green policies mandated by their city or state. For example, Houston, Dallas, San Diego and Austin are all within the EPS'a "Top 10 local government green power purchasers." But the rise in green facilities also gives rise to green facility claims. At times, it's like the Wild West out there, with green press releases and announcements made daily. Without industry standards, however, who's to say what constitutes "green"?

    Globe and Mail: Report on Business by Angela Kryhull When the doors opened to the first “Motor Show” in Toronto’s Automotive Building in 1929, patrons were enthralled by the likes of the new Cord, Stutz, Duesenberg and Hudson, among many other vehicles, bathed in amber-tinted light streaming in through skylights. The skylights are gone – and now so are the cars. After eight decades and countless trade shows and other exhibits, the Automotive Building is getting a $46.88-million makeover that will see it outfitted with ballrooms and meeting rooms, and the exterior restored to the integrity of architect Douglas Kertland’s original design.
