What is Happening?
The Board of Governors of Exhibition Place made the decision to lock out IATSE Local 58, the union representing our stagehands effective July 20th. That difficult decision followed many months of bargaining.
What are the Issues?
Exhibition Place highly values the work performed by our IATSE employees. However, the collective agreement that we have with the union does not reflect the needs of Exhibition Place, given the current nature of the meetings and events industry in a highly competitive global market. We want to negotiate a modernized Agreement that reflects the type of business that now occurs at Exhibition Place. Exhibition Place is home to hundreds of meetings, conventions, exhibitions and events which attract millions of visitors and convention delegates. Exhibition Place's goal is to establish Enercare Centre and Beanfield Centre as premier convention and event venues.
Exhibition Place remains prepared to return to the bargaining table to resolve this dispute on the basis that we have consistently communicated to the union; which is, having meaningful discussions on the key issues that are impacting Exhibition Place's competitiveness and to come to a resolution that is negotiated by both parties. We believe that these issues are best negotiated by the parties and not, as the Union has proposed, imposed on the parties by an Interest Arbitration process.
As the nature of our industry changes, we must be able to change with it. Exhibition Place will continue to work towards negotiating a modernized collective agreement that is fair to our employees but which also allows us to attract more conventions and events while remaining competitive locally, nationally and internationally.
What to Expect
Exhibition Place remains open for business. We are working closely with the various events that are scheduled to take place at the grounds.
We recommend that all guests coming to Exhibition Place consider taking public transportation to the grounds. There may be pickets at various entrances to Exhibition Place. Please respect the legal right the IATSE Local 58 employees have to picket and share their information. We expect that our IATSE employees will exercise their legal rights in a civil and respectful manner. It is in our shared interest that visitors to Exhibition Place have a safe and enjoyable experience. Any labour disruption is likely to result in some delays. We would encourage our visitors to be patient, as the picketers may slow down entry and delay passage of people and vehicles for several minutes as they cross the picket line. Please allow yourself enough travel time to get your scheduled event or activity.
