Newslink - UPDATE ON IATSE MEDIATION: September 7, 2018

September 7, 2018

Further to our last update of August 15th.

As you know, on July 20, 2018, the Board of Governors of Exhibition Place made the very difficult decision to lockout IATSE Local 58, the union that represents stage hands. Exhibition Place is the location of convention centre business, exhibitions, events and professional sports, etc., and with this business comes new technology, levels of expertise, and a requirement for the collective agreement to reflect and support these lines of business.

This is the new reality and the context under which we are trying to negotiate.

In order to try and achieve an agreement, we invited the union to mediation, and met with the assistance of a mediator on multiple days. Through the mediator, we sent the union’s bargaining committee several proposals that balanced Exhibition Place's key issues and provide significant work for the union. The union’s bargaining committee, however, has failed to provide responses that address the changing work place, to provide a collective agreement that will allow Exhibition Place to be competitive, and meet the needs of you, our clients.

Unfortunately the parties were not able to reach an agreement and mediation talks are presently suspended. While we are open to returning to the bargaining table, we remain in a lockout position.

Exhibition Place remains open for business. We thank you for your continued patience and we will continue to update you as the situation develops. Gilles Bouchard gbouchard@explace.on.ca is continuing to reach out to clients for events occurring within the next 14 days on an individual basis.
