Community Consultation

Exhibition Place, in partnership with the City of Toronto Arts and Culture Services, is developing a new Indigenous public artwork for Bandshell Park, and we want your feedback!

The project is being created in collaboration with Indigenous artist August Swinson and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nations, with STUDIO tla supporting the development and realization of August Swinson’s artistic vision.

The emerging concept centres on the beaver, reflecting its cultural, historical, and ecological significance through:

1. The Beaver as a symbol of wisdom and resourcefulness, and its natural gifts in accordance with the Grandfather Teachings.
2. The construction of the beaver lodge, representing long-term planning, patience, perseverance, and the preparation required to endure harsh winters.
3. The beaver’s role in the fur trade and its influence on Anishinaabe communities and their interactions with European settlers.

Through sculpture, landscape, storytelling, and interactive opportunities, the installation aims to create a meaningful, educational gathering place where visitors can connect, engage, and learn.

This community meeting offers an opportunity to learn more about the project and its evolving design concept, share feedback, and contribute to the ongoing development of this important public artwork.
