🗓️ July 27, 2025
🕚 2PM – 5PM
📍 Exhibition Place Grounds
Check in: General Services Building, 2 Manitoba Dr, 1:45PM
Key Takeaways:
In this workshop, you will learn how to draw a building on Exhibition Grounds using pencil and ink to capture its shape, then finish the sketch with monochrome shades of a dark colour. The completed sketch will capture the scene broken down into shapes, define a centre of interest, play with the addition and subtraction of elements and render the view three-dimensional using a scale of painted values.
Materials to Bring:
- Paper: 2-3 sheets of watercolour-friendly paper, sized about A4 or larger; 300 gsm; make sure the paper is thick enough to hold water
- Pencil: whatever you use
- Ink Pen: fineliner (like Micron) or fountain pen loaded with waterproof ink, or a dip nib pen
- Watercolour or ink: bring just one VERY DARK colour of your choice: black, charcoal, Payne’s grey, sepia, etc are all good
- Brush and water to use for making greyscale values
- Usual sketchers paraphernalia: paper towels, drinking water, hat, seat etc.
Instructor’s Bio:
Marek is a sketcher with an interest in architecture and heritage buildings; using a fountain pen with a bent nib, also known as Fude, Marek combines expressive lines with layers of values to capture busy urban scenes. He makes quick visual records of daily life in Toronto and places he visits, capturing their unique character in a simplified way, often using only values. He loves to sketch on location, and travels with a Fude pen, ink, and a few sheets of watercolour paper, allowing him to add a wash of paint to colour those precious memories.
